Will I be charged VAT or duty in the UK?

Lets be honest, Brexit has been a disaster for businesses in both the UK & EU.

Its added so much work to creating a shipment, packing it, paperwork and finding the correct commodity codes for every single product. And If there’s an error on the paperwork it all gets returned.

All we do here is the best we can with this. Im going to try and explain the process as simply as I can for our UK customers:

If you’re ordering from Northern Ireland everything is happy days. No duty needs to be paid and if you provide a NI VAT number when registering your account with us you won’t be charged VAT on your orders, easy!

Now on the other hand if your on mainland UK it gets a bit more complicated.

Because our business is located in the Republic of Ireland and the UK has now left the EU, duty will be charged on your order. Most of the items we sell are 0% duty, but electrical products like vaporizers are 2% duty. Vaporizer parts, grinders, papers etc are 0%

So there are two ways to go about this:

If your business is setup for postponed VAT with HMRC they would have provided you with a GB EORI number. But for this to actually work when we send you shipments using DPD you will also need to have a DDA (duty deferment account) set up with HMRC.

By setting this DDA account up, HMRC will provide you with a DAN number. You then need to contact DPD UK customs and provide them with your GB EORI number and DAN number and your good to go. Your shipments will arrive to you with nothing to be paid on delivery. You will declare your import VAT on your UK VAT return and you will need to pay the duty owed on your DDA account each month to HMRC - This info took us 3 days to figure out, they don’t make it easy for us :(

If you are not set up for the above your order will arrive into the UK, DPD will contact you by email before delivering the shipment, and tell you what duty and Import VAT you must pay to receive your order. Once it’s paid it will be delivered out to you very quickly.

So that’s the basics. We’re not claiming to be VAT exports here, but after days and days of research and pulling our hair out with this, it’s what we’ve figured out.

We will be setting up a new fulfilment centre in the UK this year so hopefully the process will get a lot simpler for us all.
